Consumer Sentiment in Virginia-A joint venture

Over the summer, Dr. Wilson, a Professor in the Public Affairs Department and Director of the Institute for Policy and Opinion Research, approached me about working on a new venture: a measure of consumer sentiment in Virginia.  To our knowledge this is the first such measure for the state. I jumped at the chance.

With the assistance of my student assistant Kerry Murphy, I developed a script for the survey.  The sentiment indexes were to be constructed in a manner similar to the University of Michigan.  Additional questions were added addressing health and unemployment.  That data will be useful in my ongoing research on depression and labor market outcomes.

The IPOR calling center completed 603 surveys in 8 days.  Within a few days I got the data cleaned up, the indexes constructed, and put together a press release and frequency tables.

Dr. Wilson and Teresa Gereaux (PR) helped edit my first press release.  This is a new form of writing for me and I am lucky to have such experienced folks to help.  Laura Snyder helped create a shortened version for the PRNewswire.  Additionally, students in all four of my classes read through the release and offered their comments. So, if you see any mention of a new measure for Virginia consumer sentiment, you know that it came from Roanoke College and that many people, including students, faculty, and staff, were involved.
